Description

Our nonprofit organization was founded in response to Hurricane Helene, with a mission to provide disaster relief and foster community resilience. We are based out of a beautiful historic school, a treasured landmark in our area. The property is rich in history and natural beauty, featuring a nature trail that winds along a serene creek—a habitat once teeming with local wildlife. Our goal is to rejuvenate this space and transform it into a vibrant community hub that supports both people and wildlife. By restoring the nature trail and implementing sustainable practices, we aim to create a haven for native species while encouraging outdoor education, community engagement, and conservation awareness. This project represents our commitment to preserving our natural heritage and fostering a deeper connection between our community and the environment. By obtaining this certification, we hope to inspire others to take an active role in nurturing their local ecosystems and ensuring a brighter, greener future for generations to come.

Description

Novato, a charming town in Marin County, California, boasts more open space than nearly any other part of the county. The area is rich in natural beauty, featuring oak woodlands, riparian zones, rolling hills, wetlands, and valleys—each accessible via well-maintained hiking trails. The National Wildlife Federation’s Community Habitat Certification program provides an excellent structure to bring together individuals, schools, local government, and community groups to collaborate in supporting the sustainable stewardship of this beautiful land. By uniting under the common goal of making Novato a Certified Community Habitat we are fostering community engagement in protecting our local environment by creating and promoting wildlife habitat gardens and pollinator corridors. Novato's own butterfly sanctuary and non-profit native plant nursery, Home Ground Habitats, is supporting this initiative by providing pollinator friendly plants, seeds, and education to individuals, schools, City Parks, and community groups who participate in helping Novato achieve Community Wildlife Habitat certification. Wild Birds Unlimited in Novato also supports NWF habitat garden certification! Certify your own property at www.nwf.org/certify Groups participating will be listed here as they join, and participants' activities and updates will be added to the Spotlight section and to the Links and Uploads page. We are a village on Lake Michigan, 35 miles north of Chicago. Our territory includes the Village of Lake Bluff and unincorporated sections, which are the boundaries of the Elementary School District 65. The Village of Lake Bluff takes pride in having Tree City USA and Bird City designations. We have a wide diversity of ecosystems, bur oak/hickory forest with ravines to Lake Michigan, and remnants of the great prairie. These diverse areas provide a sanctuary for birds and wildlife. In 2020 a small group of residents came together as a Growing Native (GN) community. The group focuses on educating others on the importance of preserving and restoring the native plants, wildlife, and natural wonders that abound in our community. The GN community offers networking and resources about removing invasive species, building habitats with native plants, attracting butterflies and other pollinators, and supporting birds and other valuable native wildlife. The group now has over 160 participants. We look forward to coming together as a community to implement earth-friendly practices that will improve the health of our local ecosystems and give us the Wildlife Federation Community Habitat designation.
