Description

Although Rose Valley was included in land grants by William Penn in 1681 to three Vernon brothers, the era that makes Rose Valley unique among the Philadelphia suburbs is the Arts and Crafts movement, one aspect of a many-sided reaction against the Industrial Revolution and the diminished role of the craftsman. The principal leader was William Morris whose ideas appealed to William Lightfoot Price, a successful Philadelphia architect. In 1901, Will Price bought eighty acres in the name of the Rose Valley Association. With the financial backing of a group of wealthy liberal Philadelphians interested in social reform, Price set about creating the Arts and Crafts movement's vision of "the art that is life" by manufacturing handcrafted items. The commercial aspect of the experiment was not a success, but the social and artistic sides were. Rose Valley attracted people who saw an opportunity to use their creative talents in their living environment. Today, the memories of the Arts and Crafts movement abound in the Borough. Many descendants of the original artists and artisans still live here, and the distinctive architectural style of William Price can be seen in many of the homes. On July 19, 2010, the U. S. Department of the Interior placed a large portion of the Borough on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Rose Valley is a small borough (0.73 sq mi), home to approximately 1,000 residents, and with a very high percentage of land devoted to parklands and open space. The main parks are the Saul Wildlife Sanctuary and the Chadwick Wildlife Preserve, each along the Ridley Creek as it winds its way into the Delaware Bay.

Over three miles of scenic nature trails wind through the peninsula offering residents and guests the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of wildlife up close. The Old North State Club is an integral part of the community wildlife habitat program that maintains, monitors and reports on over 250 habitats and numerous wetlands within the peninsula. The program began shortly after the golf course was created in an effort to restore lost habitat for bird populations. The program has benefits beyond simply the enjoyment of birds for their beauty. The birds and their various habitats are the subject of frequent educational programs throughout the year and help with pest control around the lake. The community has been heavily involved with wildlife conservation since its inception and prides itself with the creation and restoration of wildlife habitats, management of wetlands, and the planting of native trees and flowering plants to support and sustain local wildlife.

The North Olympic Peninsula is located in Washington State, west of Seattle. It is home to the Olympic National Park, the National Forest of the Olympic Mountains, and the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge—the latter of which includes one of the world’s longest sand spits. The northernmost area of the peninsula is home to the cities of Port Angeles and Sequim in Clallam County and to Port Townsend in Jefferson County. These cities together with their surrounding communities make up the north peninsula’s population of just over 110,000 residents. Clallam County has many microclimates due to its varied elevations, rainfall patterns, and temperatures. Located in the rainshadow of the Olympic Mountains, Sequim averages about 16 inches of precipitation per year. At one time, the peninsula supported large stands of native Garry oaks and grasslands. Still today, one native cactus plant species survives! Because of the diversity of climates, the Olympic Peninsula sustains more than 300 bird species, 700 mammal species, 1100 native plant species, and many insect species. In September 2024, the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society launched the North Olympic Wildlife Habitat Project in collaboration with the National Wildlife Federation. Since then, the project has been inspiring property owners and managers across northern Clallam and Jefferson counties to transform outdoor spaces into habitats thereby supporting the survival needs of native and migratory birds as well as native insects, animals, and plants.

Downingtown Borough is situated in Chester County, Pennsylvania, 33 miles west of Philadelphia. It is in the original lands of the Lenape Peoples, then settled by European colonists in the early 18th century, and now has a population of roughly 8,000. The East Branch of the Brandywine Creek flows right through the heart of town, creating scenic vistas for Downingtown’s parks and open spaces, as well as a number of wetlands areas. There are also a number of stormwater issues, with roughly 16% of the Borough located within a 100-year floodplain. Downingtown’s Comprehensive Plan includes protecting and restoring natural resources and addressing stormwater issues in part through green infrastructure, including rain gardens and vegetative swales. The local volunteer native plant group Restore Our Roots is leading the efforts for NWF Community Certification, working hand in hand with Borough officials, the Parks and Recreation Committee, and several local partners including the Downingtown Shade Tree Commission and the East Branch Brewing Company Green Crew.

Description

Our neighborhood has mature fig and cherry trees, offering a great food source for birds and other wildlife. We also have two parks next to each other - one for dogs and another with a track and playground. This green space provides cover and potential nesting sites for animals. I've even seen bunnies, ducks, green parrots, hawks, tree frogs, and lizards in the area! Participating in the Community Wildlife Habitat program would allow us to work together to create an even more welcoming environment for these creatures and encourage a healthy ecosystem in our Corpus Christi community
