The Village of River Forest is committed to promoting and creating a more sustainable environment through its Sustainability Commission and a variety of programs, initiatives and resources. The River Forest Sustainability Commission issues an annual Strategic Plan to guide their work.

PlanItGreen is a collaboration between the OPRF Community Foundation, Seven Generations Ahead, and multiple institutions, and is guided by the OPRF Community Foundation’s Communityworks Advisory Board and the PlanItGreen Core Team. Through PlanItGreen, Seven Generations Ahead is directing the ongoing implementation of the Environmental Sustainability Plan for Oak Park and River Forest.

Year of the Butterfly

Inspired and guided by the Illinois Monarch Project, the Year of the Butterfly is an effort of local organizations cooperating to bring awareness to our community about how to support a healthy habitat for butterflies and other pollinators. Throughout the summer various groups will provide activities for families, lectures for adults, book recommendations, and plant sales. All will help to inform residents about butterflies, especially monarchs, some of the dangers they face, and what can be done to help.

Since 2013, West Cook Wild Ones has been sharing information with our community about how important their landscaping choices are. We are a membership-based non-profit organization. We share our ideas, skills, and knowledge with others so that their yards can be hospitable to other animals. Working together, we all can ensure the continuation of ecosystem benefits we receive from healthy, beneficial animal and plant populations.

Green 4 Good

The District's Green4Good Committee comprises the Green4Good committees at each school, as well as several District administrators, all working toward making District 90 greener. Their mission is to promote a safe and healthy learning environment; encourage environmental stewardship at school and in the community, and foster a lifelong connection to the natural world for all District 90 students and their families.

Conservation @ Home

Through the Conservation@Home program, residents of Cook County are encouraged to adopt “Forest Preserves Friendly” practices while providing wildlife and native plant habitat in residential, school and workplace gardens.Residents, schools, churches and businesses can earn a Conservation@Home certification and sign for their yard by filling out an application, meeting easy-to-follow criteria, and inviting a Conservation@Home evaluator to their yard for an evaluation.
