Summary

Sherwood Forest is a small neighborhood of 270 homes near downtown Columbia. We also have the 10-acre University of South Carolina W. Gordon Belser Arboretum in our midst. This is a small arboretum, but it is unusually natural, and it provides great habitat for all kinds of birds and other animals. While the many wooded lots in our neighborhood provide pretty good habitat for wildlife, the arboretum greatly enhances our resources. We have had a "Forest Friends" program for about 4 years now, which was started as an effort to encourage neighbors to maintain, or add to, the native trees on their properties. We have expanded that effort a bit to encourage good natural habitat in general. We are hoping that the process of becoming a Community Wildlife Habitat will increase awareness of the importance of this way of maintaining yards.
