Summary

New Britain Borough (population 3,307) is a largely residential community in central Bucks County. It is home to Delaware Valley University, the Pine Valley Covered Bridge, numerous walking trails and a weekly farmers market. The farmers market provided a unique opportunity to present educational materials regarding the NWF habitat certification initiative. New Britain Borough prides itself on its strong base of dedicated volunteers that maintain most of its parks and other open space. New Britain Borough is home to several parcels of open space including the 34+ acre Wilma Quinlin Nature Preserve where the Borough’s extensive efforts at habitat preservation have been awarded both the Land Ethics Award by Bowman’s Hill Wildlife Preserve and the Pa. Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. The Preserve is located along the Neshaminy Creek and has numerous trails which are intended for nature study, wildlife observation and bird watching. The Preserve’s “Miriam’s Meadow is a native wildlife meadow established as a pollinator habitat. New Britain Borough also contains Orchard Park which is a 5 ½ acre natural area set aside for passive recreation. The park contains bluebird houses and a large community garden as well as tables and benches for wildlife observation. New Britain Borough supports an annual native plant pop-up park and other workshops as part of an ongoing effort to educate residents on the importance of transitioning their yards and public spaces to benefit birds, pollinators and other wildlife and encourage them to certify their properties as wildlife habitats. The Borough is following these practices on its own properties and has certified its own public spaces.
